PEELING

A loss of adhesion in a paint film, plaster or other membrane which causes it to separate from the substrate in flakes or strips.

PENALTY CLAUSE

The wording in the contract that outlines the penalties if areas of the contract are not adhered to.


PENETRATION

PENICILLIUM

Any of a genus of saprophytic fungus (blue-green mould) that is commonly found on moist, non-living, organic matter (e.g., bread, fruits).


PEPSICUM

A substance designed to temporarily incapacitate individuals by causing severe tearing and burning of the eyes and skin.


PERMEANCE FACTOR

A measure of water flow through material(s) of specific thickness. Permeance factors (perms) specify the vapour flow in grains of moisture per hour, through one square foot of material surface, at one inch of mercury (1_ Hg) of vapour pressure


PERMEATE

To diffuse through or to penetrate throughout a gas or material (e.g., smoke permeates the air within a structure; moisture permeates gypsum board causing it to dissolve).


PERMISSIBLE EXPOSURE LIMIT

(PEL) – The legally enforced exposure limit for a substance


PERMIT

A document issued by a governmental authority which authorizes specific work by the applicant.
