Location: Home based with some UK travel
Volunteer role, a maximum of 1 day per month – variable
Overview
The BDMA is a professional body and membership organisation with the following key objects:
- to establish and operate an organisation to represent competent individuals, accredited companies and businesses and organisations that are involved in damage management including, inter alia, disaster recovery and or the subsequent restoration of assets, documents and other property including, without limitation, disasters resulting from fire, flooding, explosions, earthquakes and spillage;
- to promote and enhance the public perception of the damage management and related industries;
- to promote good practice and high standards of service to the general public in the damage management and related industries;
- to establish, further and promote best practices in damage management and related industries with the object that membership of the company shall be recognised as a badge of integrity, competence and of a high standard of service;
- to promote and develop the general interests of all members of the Company in their relations with each other and with others in the damage management and related industries;
- to discourage unfair competition without however interfering in any way with initiative and enterprise based on fair trading;
- to promote friendly relations with others in the damage management and related industries and to provide a means for negotiations and liaison with other bodies concerned;
- to do all such things and to take all such action as may be deemed necessary or expedient to raise the prestige and status of members of the Company;
- to promote and advance the education and instruction of persons concerned or intending to be concerned with damage management and related industries;
The current sub-committee members are drawn from across the damage management industry and related fields such as claims, insurance and loss adjusting.
Sub-committee members need skills and experience in:
- Developing the strategic direction of an organisation
- Identifying development opportunities
- Skills and experience relevant to their specific sub-committee, e.g. HR, IT, Finance, Education
Person specification
The sub-committee members must have:
- a commitment to the objects of the BDMA
- a willingness to devote the necessary time and effort
- integrity
- strategic vision
- good, independent judgement
- an ability to think creatively
- a willingness to speak their mind
- an ability to work effectively as a member of a team and to take decisions for the good of The BDMA
- An ability to understand complex issues
- Good listening skills
- An ability to see pros and cons of a proposal
- Skills in taking the lead/being a leader
Time commitment
- Sub-committee members are expected to attend an induction session prior to their first committee meeting.
- Sub-committee members are expected to attend all, or most, sub-committee meetings, which are held 4 times a year but arranged flexibly and online participation is encouraged.
- Regular sub-committee meetings are scheduled for 3 hours maximum.
- Papers are distributed in advance of meetings.
- Sub-committee members are expected to attend the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and any Extraordinary General Meetings (EGMs)
Role and Responsibilities
The BDMA is a company limited by guarantee. The members of the company are those members who pay an annual subscription, whether full or associate members, and the directors.
The Role of the Sub-committees
The sub-committees comprise directors and members of the BDMA, with each sub-committee taking on the role of developing particular areas of governance or operations. For example the Education & Training sub-committee is responsible for developing the BDMA’s training course offering, exam syllabi and to oversee the conduct of examinations.
Whilst not acting in the same capacity as Directors (unless they also hold that role), sub-committee members should have regard (amongst other matters) to:
- the likely consequences of any decision in the long term,
- the interest of members
- the interests of employees,
- the need to foster business relationships with suppliers, customers and others,
- the impact of the company on the community and the environment,
- the desirability of maintaining a reputation for high standards of business conduct.
Sub-committee Members’ Practical Responsibilities and Activities
All sub-committee members are expected to contribute to the company’s development. Practical responsibilities include:
- Engaging in strategic planning
- Ensuring policies/procedures are formulated
- Providing effective financial oversight
- Ensuring sound risk management
- Enhancing the organisation’s public image
Members should familiarise themselves with the organisation’s Memorandum & Articles and Rules and propose any amendments or updates that may be required.
It is not expected that sub-committee members are to take an active management role in the day-to‐day running of the BDMA.
Eligibility
It is expected that sub-committee members will have been an active member of the BDMA however rather than detail potentially restrictive criteria it is essential that Director’s (when voting) factor in the individual’s past and present BDMA involvement.
Sub-committee members must be full, accredited members of the BDMA.
