BDMA Board Director Vacancy
Our board of directors is made up of BDMA members who are committed to helping the organisation achieve its objectives.
We are currently looking to recruit a fully accredited BDMA member (BDMA Tech, Insurance Tech, etc) to fill an upcoming vacancy on our board.
Whilst not essential, in particular we are looking to recruit someone with experience in training and education, for example having worked in Further Education, holding PTTLS, PGCE or L3 AET qualifications. Experience of working with an awarding body, or with Ofqual would be a particular advantage.

Company Director
Location: Home based with some UK travel
Volunteer role, 1-2 days per month
Overview
The BDMA is a professional body and membership organisation with the following key objects:
- to establish and operate an organisation to represent competent individuals, accredited companies and businesses and organisations that are involved in damage management including, inter alia, disaster recovery and or the subsequent restoration of assets, documents and other property including, without limitation, disasters resulting from fire, flooding, explosions, earthquakes and spillage;
- to promote and enhance the public perception of the damage management and related industries;
- to promote good practice and high standards of service to the general public in the damage management and related industries;
- to establish, further and promote best practices in damage management and related industries with the object that membership of the company shall be recognised as a badge of integrity, competence and of a high standard of service;
- to promote and develop the general interests of all members of the Company in their relations with each other and with others in the damage management and related industries;
- to discourage unfair competition without however interfering in any way with initiative and enterprise based on fair trading;
- to promote friendly relations with others in the damage management and related industries and to provide a means for negotiations and liaison with other bodies concerned;
- to do all such things and to take all such action as may be deemed necessary or expedient to raise the prestige and status of members of the Company;
- to promote and advance the education and instruction of persons concerned or intending to be concerned with damage management and related industries;
The current Directors are drawn from across the damage management industry and related fields such as claims, insurance and loss adjusting.
The Directors need skills and experience in:
- Legal responsibilities of not-for-profit companies
- Responsibilities when employing staff
- Contracts
- identifying development opportunities
Person specification
The Directors must have:
- a commitment to the objects of the BDMA

- a willingness to speak their mind
- an understanding and acceptance of the legal duties and responsibilities of Directorship
- an ability to work effectively as a member of a team and to take decisions for the good of The BDMA

- An ability to see pros and cons of a proposal
- Skills in taking the lead/being a leader
Time commitment
- The Directors are expected to attend an induction session prior to their first board meeting.
- The Directors are expected to attend all, or most, board meetings. Board meetings are held 4 times a year but arranged flexibly and online participation is encouraged.
- Regular Board Meetings are scheduled for 3 hours maximum.
- Papers are distributed in advance of meetings.
- The Directors are expected to attend the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and any Extraordinary General Meetings (EGMs)
Role and Responsibilities
The BDMA is a company limited by guarantee. The members of the company are those members who pay an annual subscription, whether full or associate members, and the directors.
The Role of Directors
The board of Directors is legally responsible for the strategic management of the company.
Directors must act in the way they consider, in good faith, would be most likely to promote the success of the company for the benefit of its purposes, and in doing so have regard (amongst other matters) to:
- the likely consequences of any decision in the long term,
- the interest of members
- the interests of employees,
- the need to foster business relationships with suppliers, customers and others,
- the impact of the company on the community and the environment,
- the desirability of maintaining a reputation for high standards of business conduct.
Directors’ Practical Responsibilities and Activities
All individuals on the board of Directors are responsible for the company’s development. Practical responsibilities include:
- Determining the organisation’s mission and vision
- Engaging in strategic planning
- Approving and monitoring the Business Plan
- Ensuring policies/procedures are formulated
- Ensuring the adequacy of financial resources
- Providing effective financial oversight
- Ensuring sound risk management
- Selecting, supporting and appraising senior staff
- Defining the relationship between the Board and the Staff
- Being a responsible employer
- Enhancing the organisation’s public image
- Selecting and inducting new directors
- Carrying out a skills matrix of the board and undertaking relevant training
- Ensuring there is no conflict of interest when decisions are being made.
In addition, the Directors have the following responsibilities:
Agree appointment and line management of consultants and employees. Line management (where applicable) may be delegated to a third party. Ensure all relevant contracts, SLA’s and agreements are in place for BDMA consultants, employees and suppliers.
The Directors are required to familiarise themselves with the organisation’s Memorandum & Articles and Rules and propose any amendments or updates that may be required.
It is not expected that BDMA Directors are to take an active management role in the day-to‐day running of the BDMA however it is expected that they ensure such management is running smoothly.
The Directors are at liberty to choose how often they meet and communicate.
The Directors, and Chairman in particular, are to ensure an AGM takes place annually.
Eligibility
It is expected that Directors will have been an active member of the BDMA however rather than detail potentially restrictive criteria it is essential that Director’s (when voting) factor in the individual’s past and present BDMA involvement.
Directors must be full, accredited members of the BDMA.
Election Process
Directors are or co-opted by the existing board of Directors.
